Here are some handy, easy-to-digest tips to consider before exploring Cape Town, so you can spend less time figuring things out, and more time enjoying the Mother City. 

Sort your phone out as soon as you arrive

Roaming coasts can be huge, and you don’t want your holiday to be ruined by an extortionate phone bill once you return home. We recommend getting a local SIM card as soon as you arrive. MTN has a good value package – pop into the MTN store at the Gardens Shopping Centre or the V&A Waterfront to get a card. 

Don’t withdraw too much (if any) cash

South Africa is fast becoming a cashless nation, meaning that everywhere you go, you’ll be able to tap-pay with your (ideally foreign-exchange-fee-free) credit cards – best stored on your phone, so you don’t have to worry about losing them. Snapscan or Zapper – free apps that let you pay with your phone via a unique QR code – are also widely used in Cape Town, and are hugely popular. The only time you might need cash is to tip. 

Talking of which…

Tipping is expected, and – in a country where average salaries are very low – much appreciated. In restaurants and bars, 10% is acceptable, but if you feel that you received excellent service, it’s a nice gesture to make it 12-15%. At petrol stations, where pump attendants fill up your tank for you, the average tip is R5-R10. The same goes for the informal car guards you’ll spot as you park your car on the road – note that their level of service differs vastly, so tip accordingly. 

And if you’re happy with the service you receive during your stay, we’d highly appreciate it if you could leave a tip for your housekeeper upon departure – it’s customary to leave anything between R100 to R200 per person per day. 

Drinking water

Cape Town’s tap water is perfectly safe to drink. If you leave the city to visit smaller towns, ask locally to make sure, although generally, water in the Western Cape is potable wherever you go. 

The dress code: layer, layer, layer 

The Mother City is a temperamental beauty, and locals often talk about experiencing four seasons in one day. No matter how pleasant the weather appears to be when you look out your window in the morning, don’t even think about leaving your villa without at least one extra layer – just in case. The weather can often change within minutes, and it can differ vastly depending on which side of Table Mountain you find yourself on. 

Don’t underestimate Cape Town’s mighty mountains and oceans 

Talking of mountains: when hiking up Table Mountain or Lion’s Head, be prepared that the weather can change rapidly, even in summer, so bring something warm to wear. Needless to say, proper footwear is an essential, as are water and sunblock. Leave valuables in your villa, and always inform someone in your group of your intended route and your expected time of return. Even better is safety in numbers – meaning that ideally you shouldn’t hike on your own (we can recommend hiking groups to join). 

Then there’s the wild and wonderful Atlantic Ocean, with powerful currents that even the strongest swimmers often underestimate – be careful, don’t swim too far out, and listen to the lifeguards when they call you back in.

Street children 

As heart-breaking as it is to see beggars on the street, especially children and mothers with infants, don’t give them money. Contrary to popular belief, this doesn’t actually change their situation, but instead tends to keep them street-bound. If you wish to help, consider giving food (ask restaurants to pack up any leftovers for example), buying the Big Issue magazine or heart-shaped stickers from street vendors, or donating to a registered charity – we can make recommendations. 

Safety first 

Most crimes in central Cape Town are petty thefts, and our villas are all located in safe areas, so there’s no need to be worried. Having said that, it pays to follow these everyday tips during your stay:  

• Avoid walking in deserted and dark places at night. 
• Always park in a secure, well-lit area with street/car guards. 
• Only tip the car guard once you’re back in your car, by rolling the window down slightly. 
• Don’t walk around with your cell phone, camera, wallet etc. in plain sight, and beware of pickpockets – keep your belongings close to you at all times.
• This also goes for swimming: don’t ever leave your valuables unattended on the beach. Better yet – leave them at home.

The best way to get around

Uber has been a game-changer for Cape Town’s taxi scene, making getting from A to B easy, safe, and cheap. It also means that you don’t need to worry about how many drinks you’re having on a fun night out! Just make sure to double-check that the licence number corresponds, and ask the driver who he’s picking up. For longer distances, such as when you want to head out to wine farms in Stellenbosch or Franschhoek, we can also organise a private driver for you, which gives you more flexibility, and means that you’ll travel in the utmost comfort – chat to us and we’ll arrange it.

Wellbeing: the most indulgent spas in the Cape

With its epic landmarks and breathtaking landscapes, as well as iconic historical figures such as Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu, South Africa seems to be a familiar destination even before you arrive – with many visitors experiencing a feeling of ‘coming home’. Dive deeper, however, and you’ll discover lesser-known facts about the Rainbow Nation that will make you see it in an unexpected new light. Here are some of our personal favourites – many of which not even locals may know. 

South Africa is a cultural melting pot 

Known as the ‘Rainbow Nation’ thanks to its vibrant mix of cultures across the country, South Africa boasts an impressive 11 official languages: English, Afrikaans, isiZulu, isiXhosa (which might sound familiar if you’re a fan of Marvel’s Black Panther movie – the people of Wakanda speak isiXhosa), IsiNdebele, Sesotho, Northern Sotho, Setswana, SiSwati, Tshivenda, and Xitsonga. Only India has more official languages. Most South Africans speak more than one language, with IsiZulu the most common, followed by isiXhosa, while Afrikaans is taught as a first foreign language in many schools. 

South Africa is the only country in the world with three capital cities

To represent the South African government being divided into three sections, three different destinations make up the country’s capital cities. Cape Town is the legislative capital and also holds the country’s Parliament (even though the seat of government is in Pretoria), Pretoria is the administrative capital, and Bloemfontein is the judicial capital. Home to the President’s official offices, the Union Buildings in Pretoria are worth a visit to admire a larger-than-life statue of Nelson Mandela, and immaculate gardens and grounds.

The world’s first heart transplant took place in Cape Town

In 1967, South Africa became the first country in the world to host a successful heart transplant. Performed by Dr. Christiaan Barnard and his team at Groote Schuur Hospital, the procedure soon became the most widely reported medical event in history. 

But that’s not all. Another South African, physicist Allan Cormack, developed the theoretical underpinnings of CT scanning in the late 1950’s – it took until 1971 for the first CT scanner to be built by his British colleague, Godfrey Hounsfield, who applied Cormack’s theoretical calculations. For their independent efforts, Cormack and Hounsfield shared the 1979 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. 

Table Mountain is one of the oldest mountains in the world

South Africa’s most recognisable landmark is over 600 million years old. To put that into perspective, the Himalayas are estimated to be between 40-50  million years old – making them sound brand-new in comparison. 

Table Mountain itself is positively young however compared to other South African mountain ranges, namely Mount Pilanesberg in the Witwatersrand Range (1.2 billion years old), Magaliesberg (2.4 BYO), Waterberg Mountains (2.7 BYO), and Makhonjwa Mountains in the Barberton Greenstone Belt (3.5 BYO). Topping all of them are the Makhonjwa Mountains (often called the ‘Genesis of Life’). Located between South Africa and Swaziland, they are said to be the oldest mountain range in the world. 

There’s a kingdom within the borders of South Africa

The Kingdom of Lesotho is a country landlocked as an enclave in South Africa in the Drakensberg Mountain area. Previously the British Crown colony of Basutoland, it was given independence by the United Kingdom in 1966 and is now a fully sovereign state, as well as a member of the United Nation, the Commonwealth of Nations, the African Union, and the Southern African Development Community. Boasting  the highest mountains in Southern Africa, the country has also been nicknamed ‘the Kingdom in the Sky’. 

South Africa is a green energy pioneer

It’s a little known fact that South Africa is the largest producer of platinum in the world – producing more than twice as much as every other country on earth combined. Platinum is a key enabler for the production and use of green hydrogen, which is going to play a key role in decarbonising the world – making platinum the critical mineral for energy transition and independence, and with it, South Africa a vital player in green energy production. 

South Africa is the largest producer of macadamia nuts in the world

Indigenous to Australia, macadamia nuts were first introduced in the Durban Botanical Gardens in 1915, with commercial production established in the 1960’s. South Africa’s subtropical regions provide the perfect climate for growing macadamias. The huge increase of production over the years meant that South Africa became Australia’s main competitor, eventually overtaking the country as the world’s largest producer in the 2010’s.

The Cape Floral Kingdom is small but mighty

It may be the smallest of the world’s six floral kingdoms, but the Cape Floral Kingdom on the south-western extremity of South Africa is also the richest – and it is the only one located within a single country’s borders. Stretching from Clanwilliam in the Western Cape province to Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape, more than 9,600 plant species can be found within an area less than 90,000km², making it more botanically diverse than the Amazon Rainforest. 

Even more impressive is the fact that fynbos makes up 80% of the Cape Floral Kingdom – two-thirds of which is endemic to this geographic belt. 

South Africa is at the forefront of 21st century scientific exploration

The remote town of Sutherland, some 400km from Cape Town, is home to the largest single optical telescope in the Southern hemisphere. Called the ‘Giant Eye on the Sky’, or SALT (Southern African Large Telescope), it is the non-identical twin of the Hobby-Eberly Telescope (HET) in the USA, and has such high magnification that it can see the light of a candle on the moon. 

Part of a world-class research facility that regularly hosts local and international scientists, SALT is an extraordinary international collaboration that has put South Africa at the forefront of 21st century scientific exploration. While currently still unable to explain about 96% of the universe – notably dark matter and dark energy – astrophysicists believe images and information gathered from SALT may trigger a revolution more dramatic than the leap from Newtonian to quantum physics. 

The biggest diamond in the world was found in South Africa

Discovered at the Premier No.2 mine in Cullinan in 1905, the Cullinan Diamond is the largest gem-quality rough diamond ever found, weighing an incredible 3,106 carats (621.20g). Named after Thomas Cullinan, the owner of the mine, it was handed over to the British royal family by South Africa’s colonial authorities. 

Cullinan produced stones of various cuts and sizes, the largest of which is named Cullinan I, or the Great Star of Africa. At 530.4 carats (106.08 g) it is the largest clear-cut diamond in the world, and is currently mounted on a royal scepter belonging to the Royal Family, which is kept in the Tower of London. 

You can see fish from space

A natural phenomenon, the KwaZulu-Natal sardine run occurs from May through July every year, when billions of sardines spawn in the cool waters of the Agulhas Bank and move northward along South Africa’s east coast. An event to rival East Africa’s great wildebeest migration, their sheer numbers create a feeding frenzy along the coastline. The shoals are often more than 7km long, 1.5km wide, and 30m deep – making them big enough to be spotted by satellites. The visually arresting migration requires cold water, with scientists predicting it may not be around forever – due to global warming. 

South Africa boasts the longest wine route in the world

The historic inland Route 62 stretches between the Western and Eastern Capes, connecting Cape Town with Port Elizabeth. At 850km, it is not only the longest wine route in the world, but also a scenic, more leisurely alternative to the busy N2 highway, as well as a less commercial option to the Garden Route. Opening up a whole different perspective, you’ll traverse scenic wine-producing towns such as Paarl, Barrydale, Montagu, Ashton, Bonnievale, Robertson, McGregor, Ceres, Wolseley, Tulbagh, and Wellington, with plenty to see and do along the way.

Start with the drive along the Atlantic Seaboard through the opulent suburbs of Bantry Bay, Clifton and Camps Bay through Hout Bay towards Chapman’s Peak Drive. 10:30am – Cape of Good Hope nature reserve

At the tip of the Cape Peninsula and 60 km south-west of Cape Town, the reserve falls within the Table Mountain National Park, a declared Natural World Heritage Site. Encompassing 7750 hectares of varied flora and fauna it abounds with buck, baboons and Cape Mountain Zebra, as well as over 250 species of birds. Ascend to the lighthouse and pause at the southwestern tip of the African continent.

13:00 – Simon’s Town to meet penguins

The story of the African penguins at Boulders Beach is one of remarkable urban colonization, but the species as a whole faces many threats and are listed as endangered. The penguin colony in Simons town started in 1983 when a pair was spotted on Foxy Beach at Boulders. The birds arrived to False Bay from Dyer Island. At the time, False Bay was closed to commercial fishing and the newcomers enjoyed abundant food and unlimited breeding sites, with the African penguin population at Boulders soaring.

Today they continue to delight, and it’s a well-known fact that time in the company of these adorable birds is guaranteed to make you smile.

A popular seaside village known for great shopping and its working harbour with rather obnoxious resident seals. The village is home to a theatre, art galleries, independent bookshop, renowned bakery, antique shops and so much more. A walk to the lighthouse is recommended

16:30 – Muizenberg Beach

To truly experience the romance of Muizenberg, take a walk along the beach in front of Surfer’s Corner, where the photogenic and colourful washhouses line the beach. The coastal stretch between Muizenberg and St. James railway station was once known as Cape Town’s Golden Mile, and today still makes for a wonderful area to explore on foot. Historic buildings, homes clinging to the mountain side, the railway line that hugs the shoreline and the endless coffee shops and stores, tidal pools and beaches will make you want to linger. We’ll pop in for either a coffee, craft beer or gin (as is your preference) before bringing an end to the day.

And no wonder – Cape Town’s extraordinary natural beauty alone makes it worth a visit. Dominated by Table Mountain and its fynbos-covered slopes, South Africa’s oldest city is a glorious melting pot of African and European influences, encompassing picture-perfect beaches, thrilling coastal drives, lush botanical gardens, thriving vineyards, and windswept nature reserves. When to go to Cape Town?

While December and January may be the most popular months to visit Cape Town, I’d personally recommend booking a trip between late February and April. Why? First of all, it’s a lot less busy, which means that you’re more likely to bump into friendly locals than your next-door neighbour from home. At the same time, the days are still warm without being too hot, the infamous Cape Doctor (the city’s south-easterly summer wind) squeaks rather than howls, and the crisp autumn light bathes the city in the most flattering hues of gold, pink, and orange.

What to do in Cape Town?

With its breathtaking setting amongst mountains, vineyards and beaches, a holiday in Cape Town means a vast choice of outdoor activities, coupled with cultural experiences and gastronomic delights. Whether you want to hit the hiking trails, take in the sights, or just soak up the sun on the beach, it’s all right on your doorstep – and there’s something for everyone, whether you’re travelling as a couple, with family, or friends.

Below I list some of my favourites.

Conquer the mountains

Capetonians are an active bunch, and a sunrise or sunset hike up Lion’s Head is considered a rite of passage. It’s a bit of a workout but once you reach the summit (it will take you 45 minutes to an hour, depending on fitness level), and see the CBD and Table Mountain on one side and the Atlantic Seaboard spread out before you on the other, you’ll feel like you’re on top of the world.

And of course, no trip to Cape Town would be complete without scaling its most famous landmark, Table Mountain. Whizz up in the revolving cable car, or climb up – choose between the Platteklip Gorge trail from near the lower cable-car station, Kasteelspoort from Camps Bay, and Skeleton Gorge or Nursery Ravine from Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden.

Experience the V&A Waterfront

As popular among locals as it is among tourists, strolling around the V&A Waterfront, the pedestrianised dockside area of shops, restaurants, markets, and museums, is a classic Cape Town experience. Cape Town added another feather to its cap with the opening of the Zeitz MOCAA (Museum of Contemporary Art Africa) in 2017, bringing one of the largest collections of contemporary African art
to a reimagined grain silo in the newly landscaped Silo District. Marvel at both the art and architecture, before taking the lift up to the rooftop of The Silo Hotel for brilliant views and cocktails (booking essential).

Other art spaces worth checking out include Everard Reed at the Waterfront, the Goodman Gallery in Green Point, WHATIFTHEWORLD and AVA (Association for Visual Arts) in the CBD, and the Norval Foundation in Constantia.

Visit one of the world’s most beautiful botanical gardens

Established in the early 20th century, few gardens today can match Kirstenbosch’s majestic setting against the eastern slopes of Cape Town’s mighty Table Mountain. More than 7,000 of Southern Africa’s 22,000 plant species are grown here, including the Cape Floral Kingdom’s famous fynbos. Bring a picnic and don’t forget to explore the ‘boomslang’ tree canopy walkway, a curvaceous steel and timber bridge that soars through the trees and offers spectacular views of its surroundings.

Sip wine in Constantia

With its grand Cape Dutch estates, the leafy Constantia Wine Route is where the South African wine industry was born in 1685, creating the New World’s oldest winemaking heritage. Scenic wine farms such as Groot Constantia, Steenberg, Buitenverwachting, and Constantia Glen offer beautiful vineyard settings for lunch and a tasting. The best bit? You can reach them within a mere 20 minutes from central Cape Town.

Follow the peninsula to Cape Point

A round-trip along the Cape Peninsula makes for a great day out. Start your loop down the Atlantic coast via Hout Bay and the dramatic Chapman’s Peak Drive (the setting for many a car commercial) to Cape Point Nature Reserve, returning along the peninsula’s False Bay side. Also known as the Cape of Good Hope, the nature reserve’s windswept beaches mark Africa’s southwestern-most point – climb to the 19th-century lighthouse for 360-degree views.

Visiting a market is a popular weekend pastime for Capetonians – they are a great place to catch up with friends over coffee and artisanal food, and stock up on fresh produce and hand-crafted items. Scala Pasta/Bar

Cape Town has its fair share of authentic Italian restaurants, but Michelin-starred chef Luciano Monosilio – widely known as the ‘King of Carbonara’ – has upped the ante at this trendy eatery. Overseen by Executive Chef Justin Barker, the atmospheric below-street-level space is indeed all about pasta, made from three different types of dough, and served as small sharing plates – perfectly al dente. We recommend going for the set menu for two – make sure to also order one of the punchy signature Negronis.

Villa 47

Osteria Tarantino

Enrico Tarantino’s osteria in De Waterkant offers an intimate and unpretentious dining experience. This institution makes use of the finest ingredients serving authentic Italian cuisine. By day, it has a warm, rustic atmosphere with wooden tables and
chalkboard menus, while evenings bring a more refined ambiance with white tablecloths, dim lighting, and a fireplace.

The fresh dishes are prepared daily by Mr Tarantino himself. Homemade gluten-free pasta can be prepared on request. Bookings are essential.

Limoncello

Limoncello Ristorante, established by Luca and Cecilia Castiglione, is renowned for its authentic Southern Italian cuisine. One of South Africa’s most acclaimed chefs, Scot Kirton has turned La Colombe into the flagship of a steadily expanding stable of gourmet destinations in Cape Town and the Cape Winelands – the latest additions to which are PIER and The Waterside. Located on different floors of the same building, with splendid waterside-views, PIER offers a multi-course, theatrical fine-dining dining experience, while The Waterside menu is slightly more relaxed, with a shorter four-course à la carte menu.

Granary Café at The Silo Hotel

Executive chef Veronica Canha-Hibbert turns seasonal, local ingredients into highly approachable, uncomplicated dishes at The Silo Hotel’s main restaurant. Lunch or dinner here is worth it for the design as much as for the food – the hotel’s famous pillow-shaped windows never fail to impress. Sunday brunch is another drawcard, as are pre-dinner drinks on the rooftop – with jaw-dropping views across the Waterfront and CBD.

Willoughby & Co

Never judge a book by its cover. Willoughby’s suspect location in the middle of a busy shopping mall at the V&A Waterfront might not entice you to stop and peruse the menu – but the weekend queues around the block tell a different story. Locals and visitors in-the-know rate this Cape Town institution for its consistently excellent, fresher-than-fresh seafood – the sushi in particular has a loyal following, with the 4×4 selection of rolls a perennial favourite among sushi connoisseurs.

Baia Seafood Restaurant

Located downstairs from Peter Tempelhoff’s award-winning restaurant FYN in the CBD, Ramenhead is the real deal, after Tempelhoff and his FYN executive chef Ashley Moss spent two weeks eating their way around Japanese ramen houses, and importing Africa’s only Yamamoto noodle machine to make noodles from scratch. Choose from four main plant-based or meat ramen dishes, add toppings and sides, and get slurping the umami-rich broth – simmered for days for that authentic taste.

Vadivelu

The brainchild of three cousins and in-laws of a South African Indian family, this vibey Kloof Street newcomer sets out to reinvent the tried-and-tested Indian formula. Jungle-style wallpaper sets the scene for the concise menu, which focuses on adapted recipes from a Tamil heritage, with a focus on the creative use of local spices. How’s Your Oni

The Oranjezicht City Farm market (OZCF) is known as a launch pad for many foodie brands in Cape Town – including this new hole-in-the-wall Japanese street food restaurant, which started life with a stall at the market (still open at the market on Wednesday evenings). Thali

Served over three courses, Liam Tomlin’s contemporary Indian menu will take you on an aromatic journey of the subcontinent, with flavours that are sure to instantly transport you to the fragrant streets of Dheli – modern Indian dining at its very best. Bombay Brasserie at the Taj Cape Town

The Pot Luck Club

While Luke Dale-Roberts’ award-winning The Test Kitchen sadly closed down, its sister restaurant continues to shine. Situated on the top floor of the Silo at The Old Biscuit Mill, The Pot Luck Club boasts rather spectacular city views, and a sharing menu that doesn’t miss a bit flavour-wise – from salty, sour, and bitter to sweet and umami. Bao Down

Cape Town’s hottest bao spot has been busting at the seams ever since throwing its doors open in 2018 – no wonder it recently relocated from its original Oranjezicht location to a larger space in Green Point. This seafood success story originated in the small West Coast town of Saldanha Bay. Galjoen

Neil Swart and Anouchka Horn made a name for themselves in Cape Town’s trendy East City with their nose-to-tail surprise tasting menu at Belly of the Beast. They’re now replicating the concept with Galjoen across the road – this time with sustainably caught fish the star of the show. The menu is 100% South African, and changes depending on the weather and what the boats bring in. The Bungalow

Boasting unparalleled views of Camps Bay from its panoramic Clifton terrace, The Bungalow is one of the city’s hottest summer destinations.
